Nestled in the heart of 4445 Connecticut Ave NW, this Italian restaurant has become a favorite for locals and visitors alike, thanks to its exceptional menu, attentive service, and a commitment to authentic flavors. If you're seeking a place to enjoy traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist, this spot is worth every visit.

The menu at Sfoglina Van Ness is an absolute delight, offering an array of carefully curated pasta dishes that change seasonally to feature the freshest ingredients. Signature items such as the agnolotti and the ravioli, stuffed with rich, savory fillings, consistently stand out. These dishes highlight the importance of high-quality ingredients, which is clear with every bite. For those who prefer a heartier option, the braised short ribs or the classic bolognese are crowd favorites, bringing together tender meats and robust, slow-cooked sauces. The balanced flavors of the sauces-perfectly seasoned without overpowering the natural taste of the pasta-showcase the expertise of the chefs.

Sfoglina takes great pride in its commitment to serving only the finest ingredients, a dedication that is evident in every dish. The restaurant's fresh pasta is prepared daily, ensuring the texture and flavor are always top-notch. Even a simple dish like their cacio e pepe is a testament to their skill; the pasta’s chewy, soft texture contrasts perfectly with the sharp, creamy pecorino and the crackling bite of black pepper. This dedication to freshness and flavor has earned Sfoglina Van Ness a reputation as one of the best spots for Italian cuisine in the area.

In addition to the main dishes, the restaurant also offers a selection of appetizers and desserts that round out the dining experience. The bruschetta, topped with ripe tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, makes for the perfect starter. As for desserts, the tiramisu is a standout, offering a delicate balance of coffee-soaked layers and velvety mascarpone cream. It's a perfect way to cap off a meal filled with rich, satisfying flavors.

Service at Sfoglina Van Ness complements its culinary offerings, with a staff that is not only knowledgeable but also attentive. The waitstaff is well-versed in the menu and is happy to offer recommendations based on your preferences. Whether it's suggesting the best wine pairings or explaining the preparation of a dish, the team ensures that every guest feels well taken care of. The inviting atmosphere, with its warm tones and comfortable seating, makes it ideal for both casual weeknight dinners and more celebratory gatherings.

For those considering dining here, it’s worth noting that the restaurant offers a great balance of ambiance and accessibility. While the space can get busy, especially on weekends, it never feels cramped, and the noise level remains manageable, making it an ideal spot for intimate dinners or group meals. The central location in Washington, DC, also makes it an excellent option for a variety of occasions.

Beyond the food and service, Sfoglina Van Ness offers an authentic Italian experience, one where each meal feels special and thoughtfully prepared. The restaurant's commitment to tradition and quality, along with its contemporary setting, ensures that it stands out in a city filled with fantastic dining options. • Great atmosphere with classy, interesting touches like vintage pasta making tools, abstract chandelier, eating nooks including a pretty cute private room for parties. We sat on the covered patio in cold weather and were cozy with their heaters and garden decor (roses, spanish moss). Had the house made pasta special with wild mushrooms, fresh herbs and cheese. Tried a bite of my husband's gnocchi bowl and it was deep with flavor. Slightly expensive but worth it.

  • I celebrated my 25th birthday at Sfoglina for dinner and was so glad I did. We ordered the octopus and Caesar salad as starters. The octopus was incredibly flavorful with a hint of spice, but slightly overcooked. The Caesar salad was good, but nothing stand-out. My 72- Hour Braised Beef Short Rib was delicious- perfectly tender meat with a flavorful and satisfying sauce. Dessert was the standout of the meal - a strawberry sorbet that rivals any sorbet I’ve had in Italy. I appreciate that the restaurant was careful to prepare food safe for my gluten allergy (Celiac). In terms of parking, there is a parking garage adjacent to the restaurant, and the restaurant does validate parking. Overall, I recommend Sfoglina for an upscale dinner or lunch with friends!

  • Went on a Sunday night at 5 o’clock. We had reservations, but the restaurant was pretty quiet. We ordered linguine with clam sauce, Hamachi Crudo, cacio e pepe , ravioli, tiramisu, and the Italian bread with ricotta. all of it was pretty good. I wasn’t crazy about the Hamachi, but my daughter liked it. Customer service was fabulous.

  • Nice busy restaurant but noisy. Luckily we were moved to a room just off of the entrance so easier to talk as a group. I had the Mafalde Telefono which I just searched speaks to the noodles which I had never had before being a long continuous pasta like an old telephone cord. It was good. The server said there was one other purely vegetarian version the san leo. Service was good and parking is available on the street.

  • We had a wonderful experience! Sat at the bar and had the Shrimp scampi and white bean hummus appetizers, which were great. The happy hour super Tuscan is a great red. The chicken Parm is super tasty and the Shishido peppers are a great side. Only disappointment was the meatball appetizer which was flat. Special shout out to Justin at the bar. He's great!

  • Saylor provided one of the best experiences ever. She was patient, knowledgeable, professional and courteous. We had a complicated group ( 10 PAX from 8 y.o. to 94 y.o) and she navigated the whole chaos like a swan. The place is nice, but somewhat too "white" in the decor, JMHO and to each his own. Food was good, but pasta was a let down because we all expected our pasta to be served " al dente" and we didn't get that. Next time we'll make sure to specify that. Prawns were excellent just grilled in butter and black pepper. Quality food needs no "rubs" nor sauces. Do NOT miss the Gianduja cake. It was truly the star of the show. I had to fight fiercely to keep my portion safe, and I wasn't that successful And, coffee was very nice. Not overly roasted and just "au point".

  • We had a truly lovely evening at this restaurant, and it’s definitely worth a visit. From the start, the drinks were spot on and the bread with oil was just perfect for nibbling. We tasted a range of dishes, from seafood pasta to a rich bolognese and some absolutely delicious truffle ravioli. Even the kids’ menu was a hit, which is always a win. The atmosphere really stands out, it’s beautiful, quiet, and has this charming old-school Italian decor that makes you feel right at home. Seating is comfortable and cozy, though I will say parking can be a bit tricky, so plan a little extra time for that. Overall, it’s a delightful spot for a family dinner or a special night out.

  • Top notch Italian food. I enjoyed my experience here as well the food and ambiance. The indoor outdoor patio is a nice place to sit. Even on a warmer day it's pretty cool in there creating a very pleasant dining experience. The menu is pretty large with plenty of things to choose from and my service was good.
